Photo by Greg Southam /Postmedia Privileged power A recent statement from Mayor Don Iveson regarding the latest assaults on two Muslim women stated that far and away the majority of Edmonton residents were “privileged”. I found that statement as disgusting and ignorant as the attacks on the women. When you single out any group based on the characteristics they were born with then you are a racist. People cannot help how and where they were born nor should they ever have to apologize for it. This ridiculous idea that everyone from “here” is privileged and everyone who emigrates is lowly and deserving of special treatment is arrogant and tone deaf. It is an insult to all of the successful hard working people who have come to this country. Mr. Iveson should also be aware that a whole lot of people from every race, religion, creed, colour, etc. don’t feel very damn “ privileged” right now.
