Optimism for the COVID-19 vaccine and hopes for the beginning of an economic recovery have helped push up gasoline prices in Austin and nationwide. Austin gas prices have risen 5 cents per gallon in the past week and currently average $2.04 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline, according to industry website GasBuddy.com, which tracks fuel prices nationwide. GasBuddy, which surveys 830 Austin-area stations daily, said prices in Austin are 15 cents higher per gallon than a month ago, although they remain 16 cents lower per gallon than a year ago. The national average price of gasoline has risen 4 cents per gallon in the past week, putting it at $2.38 per gallon. The national average is up 16 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 17 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. "Gas prices have jumped to yet another multi-month high as crude oil prices rise amidst perceived improvement in the COVID-19 pandemic, which continues to pump prices up as demand shows renewed signs of recovery," said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy.
