Photo from THE CANADIAN PRESS/Jeff McIntosh FORT MCMURRAY (660 NEWS) — City council has unanimously agreed to request that the Canadian government lobby U.S. officials to come up with an agreement on our efforts against climate change, as well as an agreement on the North American energy supply. A number of things were on the agenda meeting Tuesday night, including the Trans Mountain pipeline, bylaw permits for oil sands, and renewable energy resources. Council also approved a five-year limit on development permits for oil sands work camps. Current bylaws don’t have limits and existing camps meeting certain criteria are welcome to apply for a one-time permit extension before they must apply for a new permit. The proposal also means that work camps won’t be permitted in nearly 30 areas. It also requires camp operators to submit yearly reports on their facilities. Oil Sands Community Alliance (OSCA) executive director Perry Berkenpas says that the organization has been working together with the community on this issue for the last two years.
