Article content The farmer has seen more clean-ups in the last 18 months than the previous 10 years combined in the Maidstone area — a reflection of the $280 million in work that’s already been spent to restore and reclaim thousands of sites. Article content “For a sector that’s struggled here for the last five or six years, it’s really put everyone back to work. And in the short term, it’s good for the local economy,” said Owens, who’s the vice-president with the Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan. “It’s a positive development.” The reclamation work on Owens’ farm, as well as his neighbours’, is part of a $400 million program funded by the federal government and administered by the Saskatchewan government. Since it was launched in 2020, the province has issued $380 million in contracts, aiming to clean up 8,000 inactive wells by 2023.
